Our Favorite Tips for Healthy Hair

We all love changing up our hairstyle, color, and even texture. However, trying out a new look can sometimes have a few lasting consequences—namely, damage. You'll want to take care of your locks to continue having your best hair days. These tips will help your hair remain healthy, strong, and beautiful!

Tips for Healthy Hair

1. When to Wash?

It can be challenging knowing when to wash your hair; some individuals say every day while others say once a month! Generally, the oilier your hair is, the more you may need to wash it. A scalp that produces a lot of oil can benefit from daily washing. If your scalp makes less oil or your hair is dry from chemical treatments, washing less frequently is recommended.

2. Shampoo Strategy

You don't need a lot of shampoo, generally only one to two teaspoons worth. Applying shampoo to your scalp is often all that is necessary instead of doing the length of your hair. Your scalp is where oils accumulate, and washing the ends of your hair can lead to dehydration of the strands.

3. Don't Skip Conditioner

Most people should use conditioner each and every time they wash their hair. A conditioner is excellent for helping to increase the moisture in your locks. It also boosts shine, reduces static, and can help protect your hair from UV rays. Unlike shampoos, conditioner application should focus on the tips and lengths of your hair instead of the roots.

4. Investigate Ingredients

The hair care aisle can be overwhelming, but take some time to investigate the ingredients in your product. Usually, you'll want to find a shampoo and conditioner specifically suited to your hair needs. Some of the most nourishing ingredients for healthy hair include Argan oil and coconut oil.

5. Turn Down the Shower Temperature

Hot showers are relaxing, but indulging too often can damage your scalp and weaken hair. Showering with warm water and rinsing with cold water can help shut down the cuticles, sealing in moisture and promoting shine.

6. Protect Your Hair in the Pool

Chlorine can wreak havoc on your hair. Usually, simply wetting your hair before you dive in can help prevent it from absorbing too much pool water. Some choose to condition their hair before swimming or use a swim cap to seal out water entirely. When you return from the pool, consider washing and applying a deep conditioner to help boost moisture.

7. Keep Strands Out of the Sun

Just like your skin, UV rays can cause damage to your hair. Wearing a hat when you're outdoors all day can help prevent damage. Also, leave-in products containing antioxidant ingredients may help protect your hair from the sun and environmental pollutants.

8. Give Your Hair a Break

There are multiple ways you can give your hair some downtime. Leaving your hair down or using a loose clip can reduce breakage if you regularly pull it into a tight ponytail or bun. Air drying your locks instead of blow drying or using hot tools can also help. Finally, if you notice your hair is becoming dry and brittle after coloring or other treatments, it may be time to take a break until your hair regains its health.
